The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has called upon Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) to accelerate apprenticeship engagement and focus on learning outcomes, inclusion, and job readiness during a national review meeting in New Delhi.
MSDE Secretary Debashree Mukherjee urged public sector enterprises to move beyond hiring numbers and track tangible outcomes such as completion, certification, employability, absorption, and retention. She also highlighted the need to expand opportunities for women and under-represented groups.
The ministry instructed CPSEs to address existing shortfalls by creating enterprise-level intake plans aligned with their statutory 2.5% to 15% apprenticeship requirement. Enterprises were also asked to validate workforce data on the apprenticeship portal, create time-bound recruitment roadmaps, and designate senior nodal officers to address operational bottlenecks. According to MSDE, 44.75 lakh apprentices have been engaged by 47,452 establishments under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS-2) since FY 2022-23.
What it means
- CPSEs must prepare realistic recruitment plans to meet their mandated apprenticeship quota of 2.5% to 15% of their workforce.
- Public sector enterprises must designate senior-level nodal officers to supervise apprenticeship rollout and clear operational hurdles.
