The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and telecom service providers are working to restore mobile and optical fibre connectivity across parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha following disruptions caused by Cyclone Arnab. Heavy rain, flash floods, uprooted trees, and commercial power outages had damaged infrastructure in several coastal areas.
According to the Ministry of Communications, overall telecom network availability in Andhra Pradesh has reached 99.18 percent, including 98.5 percent in West Godavari and 91.96 percent in Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema. To bridge service gaps, 11 Cell on Wheels mobile units have been deployed, and Intra-Circle Roaming (ICR) has been activated across affected districts. In Odisha, connectivity is gradually improving in Ganjam, Gajapati, and Kandhamal districts as rainfall eases and floodwaters recede.
The ministry explained that ICR allows mobile users to connect to other operators’ networks if their primary provider lacks coverage. Users can access this by keeping automatic network selection enabled on their phones or selecting an alternative operator manually.
What it means
- Mobile subscribers can connect to another telecom provider's network if their own operator lacks coverage in the affected district.
- Users whose phones fail to connect automatically can manually select an available network in their phone settings.
