According to the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, India’s fisheries sector is evolving from a primary production activity into a technology-driven, value-oriented economy. Enterprises are adopting artificial intelligence, IoT, blockchain, and smart cold-chain systems to improve productivity and traceability. Value addition through processed, ready-to-cook, and packaged formats helps reduce post-harvest losses, extend shelf life, and open new livelihood avenues for fishers, women’s groups, and small enterprises.
The Government of India has committed ₹39,272 crore since 2015 through schemes such as the Blue Revolution Scheme, FIDF, PMMSY, PM-MKSSY, and Kisan Credit Card. Additionally, 46,500 facilities including transportation systems and retail markets were added with an investment of ₹3,393.85 crore. The department has also supported the formation of 2,195 Fisheries Farmer Producer Organizations and integrated several with the Open Network for Digital Commerce.
Women’s participation has been prioritized under PMMSY, with projects worth over ₹4,155 crore approved over the last five years for the benefit of more than 1.28 lakh women. These initiatives support activities like fish drying, micro-processing, and mobile vending units across coastal, inland, and northeastern states.
