A high-level team from the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM), led by Chairperson Rajesh Verma, met with district officials in Amritsar and Tarn Taran to review paddy stubble management. Expressing concern over an increase in farm fire incidents, the panel ordered field teams to intensify preventive steps and eliminate burning.
The Commission instructed administrations to designate sector-wise nodal officers responsible for tracking and reporting the actual utilisation of paddy stubble as fuel across thermal power plants, brick kilns, and other industries. It also directed field officers to visit villages regularly, ensuring that residue management machinery from Custom Hiring Centres reaches farmers without delay.
With Tarn Taran recording among the highest number of stubble burning cases, the district administration was directed to treat the problem as a top priority or face strict accountability. The CAQM team also inspected an industrial boiler in Amritsar running on paddy stubble pellets to examine options for scaling up productive residue use.
