The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has issued an advisory titled ‘Women’s Safety at Work and Public Spaces’ to ten Union Ministries, the Railway Board, and all States and Union Territories. The commission noted that despite existing laws, safety concerns persist, citing that around 4.4 lakh cases of crimes against women were reported in the latest National Crime Records Bureau report.
The advisory focuses on eight core areas, including raising awareness about sexual harassment, improving infrastructure, encouraging bystander intervention, enhancing police responsiveness, survivor support, tackling cybercrime, and implementing long-term reforms.
The NHRC has urged all recipient authorities to implement its recommendations and submit progress reports on implementation.
What it means
- Recipient Union Ministries, State governments, Union Territory administrations, and the Railway Board must submit progress reports on the recommendations within two months.
