Government news – VoiceOfGP

The All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi, reported findings from a community-based Ayurveda programme conducted in Faridabad district, Haryana, aimed at promoting physical and mental health among elderly individuals. According to the project report submitted to an expert committee, improvements were recorded in quality of life, Agnibala, bone mineral density, and cognitive health following the interventions.

Under its Public Health Initiative, AIIA screened 5,594 individuals aged 60 to 80 years over three months and provided them with Ayurvedic medicines. Initial assessments had identified health challenges including vision problems in 67.73% of participants, physical inactivity in 43.05%, and reduced cognitive function in 6.85%, alongside high blood pressure, elevated blood glucose, and sleep issues. In a separate dementia-focused component, 200 patients were screened and given medicines over four months.

Following the 60-day intervention, the total World Health Organization Quality of Life score increased from 292.0 to 326.3, and improvements were observed across all six parameters of Agnibala. In the cognitive health component, Mini-Mental State Examination scores shifted towards normal levels, quality-of-life scores rose from 277.4 to 364.2, and improvements were recorded in serotonin, acetylcholine, DHEA, and vitamin D levels. The institute stated that further extensive scientific evaluation and studies are necessary to validate these findings.
