The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) announced changes to rationalise the periodic Know Your Customer (KYC) review framework for Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs). Under the updated framework, review periods previously set at annually are increased to two years, and those set at once every three years are extended to eight years.
For SWAGAT-FI FPIs, the KYC review periodicity will stay unchanged at 10 years, and existing relaxations for GS-FPIs will also remain the same. Additionally, SEBI is discontinuing the separate confirmation regarding changes in previously submitted information during the continuance of registration.
According to SEBI, these steps are aimed at reducing repetitive compliance requirements and easing the compliance burden for FPIs. The provisions of the circular will come into effect from December 1, 2026.
What it means
- The periodicity for periodic KYC reviews increases from one year to two years, and from three years to eight years.
- The separate confirmation regarding changes in previously submitted information at registration continuance is discontinued.
