The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has issued a caution against unregistered persons offering unauthorized stock tips and trading calls through invitation-only WhatsApp groups. According to the release, operators of these groups often pose as market experts using overseas numbers and share trading calls under the guise of free education. They frequently use accomplices to post fake profit claims, a practice known as astroturfing, to trick unsuspecting participants.
SEBI stated that when such groups are banned by regulatory bodies, members are often invited to join new groups under the pretext of platform risk controls. The regulator has advised the public not to join such groups, avoid transferring money to recommended apps, and refrain from sharing trading account details. Investors should deal exclusively with SEBI-registered intermediaries and verify their registration status through official portals.
