According to the Ministry of Science & Technology, astronomers have uncovered the mystery behind the changing X-ray behaviour of NGC 4490 ULX-8, one of the brightest X-ray emitters in a nearby galaxy, by tracking observations over a 24-year period.
A research team involving the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and the Raman Research Institute analysed archival and recent observations obtained with Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Swift space-based telescopes between 2000 and 2024. The study revealed that ULX-8 remained exceptionally luminous throughout the period, while its brightness varied substantially. The findings provide strong evidence that the source is powered by a stellar-mass black hole accreting matter at rates exceeding the classical Eddington limit.
