Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh visited Sikkim to review fisheries development initiatives under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). During the visit, Soreng District in Sikkim was announced as India’s first notified Organic Fisheries Cluster under PMMSY. The cluster focuses on chemical-free fish farming, specifically targeting Amur carp, Indian Major Carps, and Trout, aiming to build on the state’s organic ecosystem and improve farmer incomes.
The Union Minister launched a standard operating procedure (SOP) for organic certification of fisheries in the Northeastern region to provide a structured framework and traceability. Additionally, fisheries projects worth ₹375 lakh were inaugurated under PMMSY, covering infrastructure such as hatcheries, feed mills, cold storage, and production technologies like Biofloc and Recirculatory Aquaculture systems. Kisan Credit Cards and financial assistance cheques were also distributed to fish farmers.
Furthermore, Sikkim signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) for the institutional procurement of locally produced Rainbow Trout to provide a stable market for trout farmers.
