The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has notified amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, to support the adoption of flex fuel vehicles that can use E85 and other high ethanol fuels. According to the ministry, the updated rules include emission certification provisions for E100 alongside E85. Vehicles certified for these high-ethanol fuels are required to meet the applicable emission and safety standards for their category.
The ministry stated that flex fuel vehicles use a single fuel tank to operate on various petrol and ethanol blends, depending on the manufacturer’s design and certification. The rules also update biodiesel provisions and include technical corrections, taking effect from the date of publication in the Official Gazette.
Existing vehicle owners are not required to switch to E85 or modify their vehicles. The ministry clarified that E85 and E100 are meant only for specially designed vehicles, and compatibility with E10 or E20 does not mean suitability for E85. Motorists are advised to check the fuel compatibility sticker and the owner’s manual.
