Indian Navy Rescues Hijacked Vessel Azini off Somali Coast, Saves 20 Crew

Defence news – VoiceOfGP

The Indian Navy has rescued the hijacked fishing vessel Azini and all 20 crew members off the north-eastern coast of Somalia following an operation that lasted over 48 hours. The vessel had been hijacked earlier by an armed pirate group, creating a maritime security threat that it could be used as a mother ship to launch further pirate attacks against merchant ships in the region.

The operation involved a mission-deployed warship supported by a maritime reconnaissance aircraft. Marine Commandos were also deployed via a precision airdrop from an Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft. Navy forces tracked the vessel, applied non-kinetic measures to prevent its escape, and executed a tactical intervention that freed all crew members without any casualties or injuries.

What it means

  • All 20 crew members aboard the hijacked vessel Azini were safely rescued without casualties or injuries.
  • The Indian Navy secured the vessel and eliminated the threat of pirates using it for further attacks in the region.
