According to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), prison authorities at the Central Prison in Hyderabad have established a separate Gender-Neutral Cell for persons with diverse gender identities and expressions. The initiative aims to ensure appropriate living arrangements and dignity for these inmates.
The development followed a visit to the prison by the Commission’s Special Monitor for transgender persons and LGBTQ+ rights. During the visit, the implementation of existing NHRC and Ministry of Home Affairs advisories was emphasized. The Superintendent of Central Prison subsequently reported to the Commission that recommendations to set up the facility had been carried out, and authorities have also permitted affirmative clothing for inmates accommodated in the cell.
