India has significant scope to integrate solar energy generation with crop cultivation on the same land, according to a backgrounder issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). As of August 2025, the country had 36 operational agrivoltaic projects with an aggregate capacity of 37.54 megawatts (MW), along with 10 pilot installations under development.

The government noted that national agrivoltaic potential is estimated between 3,000 gigawatts (GW) and roughly 14,000 GW. A nationwide screening identified 47.35 million hectares of agricultural land suitable for agri-photovoltaic setups. Six states—Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh—account for approximately 50 percent of this potential.

Under this system, solar panels are installed on elevated structures above crops, allowing farm machinery to operate underneath while shielding crops and reducing soil moisture loss. PIB stated that such dual land use can diversify farm income, potentially raising annual earnings in some instances from around ₹60,000 per acre to over ₹1 lakh per acre.
