According to a Press Information Bureau backgrounder, the Catch the Rain campaign is a nationwide initiative focused on rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and the restoration of water bodies. The campaign encourages communities and institutions to conserve rainwater, clean ponds, and promote afforestation in water-retention areas.
The backgrounder outlines the progress of the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari (JSJB) initiatives. JSJB 1.0 was implemented from 1 April 2024 to 31 May 2025, followed by JSJB 2.0 on 1 June 2025. The 2026 initiative, launched on 1 June 2026, integrated the JSJB approach with the Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain campaign to promote low-cost, hyper-local interventions and community participation.
The release highlights that under the JSJB initiative, over 1.55 crore artificial recharge and storage structures have been constructed. An impact evaluation study conducted on JSJB 1.0 structures estimated 2.43 billion cubic metres of groundwater recharge.
