Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal began a four-day visit to South Korea to pitch India’s maritime opportunities to the Korean industry. According to the Ministry, the trip aims to deepen bilateral maritime ties and support India’s goal of becoming a top-five shipbuilding nation by 2047.
Kicking off the visit in Busan, Sonowal interacted with Indian professionals working in Korean shipbuilding. He urged them to use the VOYAGES framework—established during the South Korean President’s visit to India in April—as a platform for professional growth and maritime collaboration. The Minister stated that India is seeking partnerships in shipbuilding, shipping, ports, and maritime logistics.
Sonowal’s schedule includes meetings with global shipbuilding leaders, industry bodies, and research institutions. He will also participate in a ministerial roundtable in Busan for World Maritime Day, alongside representatives from major maritime nations and the International Maritime Organisation.
