The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has reached a new milestone in developing an indigenous Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system for the Indian Navy, marking the inauguration of its ‘Setting to Work Phase-2’ activity at Larsen & Toubro’s Hazira facility in Gujarat.
Developed by DRDO’s Naval Materials Research Laboratory, the AIP system enhances the underwater endurance of diesel-electric submarines by significantly lowering their reliance on atmospheric oxygen. The inauguration was attended virtually by Defence Secretary and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh, alongside senior Navy and defence research officials.
In this phase, the AIP Energy Module will be energised for power generation and put through rigorous trials under Indian Navy protocols. Following these tests, the module will be handed over to Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in early 2027 for integration onto a Kalvari-class submarine.
