According to a circular issued by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on November 5, 2026, fund managers can now determine and record an investor’s accredited status at onboarding or during a scheme’s tenure. This manager-led accreditation serves as an additional and optional route alongside the existing accreditation agency mechanism, taking effect with immediate effect.
The framework specifies that manager-determined accreditation will remain valid for three years. Determinations made by a manager are recognized across managers within the same group for Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), Specialized Investment Funds (SIFs), and portfolio management services. Additionally, Persons Resident Outside India are deemed accredited investors without needing separate certificates, while Limited Liability Partnerships must have every partner independently meeting the eligibility criteria.
