Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurated the world’s first ‘Air Pollution Analysis’ facility for Delhi NCR, known as the Integrated Atmospheric Chemistry and Aerosol Toxicity Analysis Laboratory (AATAL). Established at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology’s (IITM) Delhi Branch under ‘Mission Mausam’, the facility aims to go beyond routine Air Quality Index (AQI) numbers to identify real-time pollution sources and their health implications.

According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the laboratory uses advanced instruments to analyse the chemical composition of atmospheric gases and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), distinguishing between sources such as vehicular emissions, industrial activity, crop-residue burning, and road dust. Integrated with IITM’s AIRWISE system, the facility provides high-resolution forecasts and real-time source apportionment to help the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) and other agencies plan targeted interventions.
